— How It Works —

Every off-the-shelf pace calculator models a race you run without stopping. A beer mile is not that race. It is four all-out quarters separated by four standing chugs that gradually turn your stomach into a small liquid kettlebell. The model comes in three parts: the engine, the recovery, and the stomach tax.

The engine is your open running ability. Whatever you enter — a recent mile, 5K, 10K, or a VO2max — is normalized to a single equivalent open-mile time using the Daniels–Gilbert oxygen-cost equations, the same VDOT math coaches use to translate between race distances. That is the pace you would hold with nothing in your hands and nothing in your gut.

The recovery is the twist: standing at the line to drink is not purely lost time. Each chug lets your legs reconstitute a share of their anaerobic reserve, with a physiological time constant of roughly fifty seconds. A quick seven-second elite chug buys back only a sliver; a thirty-second recreational chug restores nearly half. The race behaves like four separated repeats rather than one continuous mile — which is about the only good news on this page.

The stomach tax is the cost of the beer itself. Beer physics are delightfully simple: every ounce you drink becomes volatile cargo, and that volatile cargo has opinions about your mile ambitions. Four beers don't run for free — roughly a kilo and a half of load, so by the fourth lap your stomach has become a small weighted vest. The running literature puts the honest floor at about a one-percent velocity penalty per one percent of body mass carried; carbonation and churn add the rest, which no dataset can pin down. Displayed chug segments ramp across beers one to four, the way real splits do, while always summing to four times your average.

The vomit line follows the official rule exactly: a single penalty quarter at the end, run at your fully-loaded fourth-lap pace plus a few seconds to regroup — no matter how many times your stomach files its complaint.
